Thank you for your inquiry. The Slots for this outrigger upright will start about 2" down from the top and then continue all the way to the bottom of the post. For use with shelving you would need The shelf brackets please see: https://www.storesupply.com/c-718-she..., You will want the brackets from this that measure for the ½” slots 1” O.C.
