Is the wood coated with a varnish or can they be painted on?

Thank you for your inquiry. The Children's Wood Hangers do not have a glossy clear coat finish. They do have a coating on the hangers for protection, so they are not completely unfinished. Please let us know if you require any additional assistance. Thank you again, have a great day!
